Our examples are programmatically compiled to illustrate current usage of the word ‘entertainment.’ These are not intended to represent the opinions of Merriam-Webster or its editors.
Entertainment, in general, means agreeable occupation for the mind or diversion for the senses. It can also refer to specific types of performances, such as a ball, circus, non secular pageant, or satire. A story can also entertain, as in the case of the Scheherazade story in the Persian professional storytelling tradition. This story has been adapted for a variety of media, including orchestral music by Rimsky-Korsakov, Ravel, and Szymanowski; a film by Pasolini and others; and an innovative video game.
